Bertoli Mitchell advises Oxford University Press on its acquisition of S. Karger

4 December 2025

Oxford University Press (OUP) has announced completion of the acquisition of 100 percent of the shares in Karger A.G. Announced in November, the closing of the transaction means that Karger now becomes part of the wider OUP organization. We are delighted to have advised OUP in this transaction.

Owned by the Karger family for four generations, Karger Publishers has a long history of high-quality publishing in medical and health sciences. The acquisition brings together a shared commitment to quality and scholarly integrity and an opportunity to extend the reach and impact of Karger’s leading academic and research publishing in medicine and health sciences. It was a privilege to support OUP in this transaction and a pleasure to work OUP’s executive team.

Nigel Portwood, CEO of OUP, said: “I want to extend a very warm welcome to the Karger team, as well as their editors, authors, and customers. OUP is a department of the University of Oxford and one of the largest and oldest university press publishers in the world. This acquisition marks a significant moment in the history of our two organizations, underpinned by our joint publishing expertise, reputation for quality, and shared commitment to scholarly integrity.”
