David & Charles buys the UK books business of F+W Media (New York)

(July 2019)

F&W Media International has aquired the UK books business of parent firm F+W Media   in a management buyout, forming a new company called David and Charles.  Bertoli Mitchell advised the investment group.

The company name David and Charles sees the business return to its original moniker, with all new title publishing falling under the imprint.

Current F&W Media International books employees will be moving to the new company.

David & Charles Publishers was originally founded in 1960 and established itself as a specialist on Britain's canals and railways. It was acquired by F+W Publications - now F+W Media - in 2001 and rebranded nine years later.

Managing director, James Woollam, said: “It is entirely fitting that we are returning to the name of David and Charles. It is a brand that has a fantastic heritage, an enviable reputation for great publishing and a long standing history of innovation. Our recent new title publishing has received wide acclaim from our readers, customers and partners and we are excited to build on this as we start a new chapter.

“We are now able to look forward with a clear path. My thanks also go to the investment group and management team colleagues for all of the hard work to get us to this point."
